About Cleary Elevator

1986 — Bob Cleary Sr. cofounds Up-Right Elevator Company.

After 20 years as an elevator mechanic, Bob Sr. forms Up-Right Elevator with a business partner. Starting with a single customer, Bob Sr. quickly gains the trust of more clients, building a reputation as an honest businessman who provides excellent service at a fair price.

1990 — Bob Cleary Jr. joins his father in the elevator business.

After graduating from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Bob Cleary Jr. begins working as a field technician at Up-Right Elevator. Eventually, Bob’s role evolves into manager of modernization and construction.

1996 — Cleary Elevator is founded by Bob Sr. and Bob Jr.

After Bob Sr. and his Up-Right Elevator partner go their separate ways, father and son open their own elevator service company. Many clients whom Bob Sr. cultivated relationships with follow him to this new enterprise and remain clients of Cleary Elevator today.

1997 — Cleary Elevator finds a home.

A 3,000-square-foot facility in Quincy, Massachusetts, becomes home base for Cleary Elevator operations. The building remains the company headquarters for the next 20 years.

2001 — Shawn Cleary follows his father and brother into the elevator industry.

After graduating from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, Shawn ventures out to Seattle, Washington, to gain experience in sales and as a field technician in the elevator industry.

2002 — Mike Cleary builds an expertise in engineering design.

After graduating from Northeastern University with a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering, Mike—Bob and Shawn’s younger brother—works as an engineer at a company where he expands his technical skills designing and building CAT and bomb-scanning machinery.

2004 — Shawn comes back to Boston and joins Cleary Elevator.

Shawn first works as a Cleary field mechanic before becoming service manager. His role evolves into customer relationship manager. Like his dad, Shawn excels in cultivating long-term relationships with current and potential clients.

2005 — Three’s company when Mike joins the family business.

Like his brothers before him, Mike first learns the nuts and bolts of the elevator trade as a field technician. With his exceptional understanding of technology and software and his extensive troubleshooting abilities, Mike transitions into the role of field adjuster and later takes on the roles of service operations manager and head of IT.

2008 — Bob Sr. retires… kind of.

With his sons now firmly rooted in the company, Bob Sr. decides it’s time to transition ownership of Cleary Elevator to Bob, Shawn, and Mike. For many years, he remains highly involved with the business, going into the Quincy shop most days to share his knowledge with his three sons and staying in touch with many long-standing customers, who had become close friends.

2011 — Bob Sr. leaves a wonderful legacy for his sons to carry on.

On January 2, 2011, Bob Sr. passes away. Fifteen years earlier, he founded an elevator business based on the belief that if you provide your clients with hands-on, personalized customer service and attention, you will earn their loyalty. His sons honor their dad every day by building upon his successes and staying true to his core values.

2017 — Cleary Elevator moves to more spacious headquarters.

Cleary’s operations are moved to a 10,000-square-foot facility in Hingham, Massachusetts, that offers more office space to accommodate the company’s team of customer service professionals. The new home base also has a large warehouse, which Cleary keeps fully stocked with the critical parts and tools required to service every customer’s elevator equipment.

2021 — Cleary Elevator keeps hitting business milestones.

The hard work and focus of the Cleary brothers and their team pay off. The company achieves a record high of elevator units being served — 550 units throughout Greater Boston and Eastern Massachusetts.

2022 — Cleary Elevator goes through its own modernization.

Cleary modernizes its look, with an updated logo and a new, streamlined website to provide current and potential clients with an easy way to get information about the company’s services and contract options, and request a consultation.
